About the types of leather

In the production of modern watch straps, companies use various materials, such as natural leather, nylon, satin, rubber, canvas and others suitable for these purposes. But the most popular straps are made of genuine leather, whether it's exotic or familiar to us calfskin.

There are many types of leather, from which you can make watch strap, having the ability. In this article, we will only talk about the most common in the manufacture of watch straps for skin types. At once we will emphasize that beyond the framework of our narration there are some types of leather, for example: skin of a kenugra, a wild boar, a camel, etc.

Alligator, crocodile, caiman.

It should be noted that in Russia the concept of "crocodile skin" is often misunderstood. People include in this concept both the skin of the crocodile, and the skin of the alligator, and the skin of the caiman, without understanding and not knowing what their differences are. Probably, 99% of buyers will not be able to tell the skin of the crocodile from the skin of the alligator in the finished watch strap.

Alligator is a genus of crocodiles, which includes only two subspecies: American (he is also a Mississippian alligator) and a Chinese alligator. Leather alligator - the most commonly used in the manufacture of leather straps. It is believed that this is the most soft, flexible, elastic, yet durable skin. It has an "umbilical scar": in shape it looks like an elongated star with a cobweb pattern. This pattern is unique, unique, there is only an alligator. Leather alligator is considered the most expensive of all types of leather raw materials.

Leather crocodile - the second in the frequency of manufacturing leather straps. It is divided into different species: Siamese crocodile, Nile, etc., but it does not make sense to go into such details. It is very soft, durable skin. It has a number of differences in the pattern of the abdominal part from the figure of the abdominal part of the alligator.

Leather  of the caiman is practically not used on an industrial scale for the manufacture of watch straps. Inside the scales is a hard layer, resembling a nail in appearance, as a result of which the skin is rather coarse, stiff, bends only in the areas of the scales joint, when trying to bend the scales themselves, they often burst. For the production of watch straps can only come up young individuals, tk. The inner layer is not yet rigid enough, and the skin is much softer than in adult individuals. This is the cheapest kind of skin, and the most short-lived. Very often unscrupulous sellers give the skin of the caiman for the skin of the crocodile, because having no experience with exotic skin, it is quite difficult to distinguish the caiman skin from the crocodile skin.

Lizard.

The skin of the lizard (iguana, monitor, Komodo dragon) is very durable, soft and plastic. It reminds small tiles. It began to be used for the production of straps. She has a very interesting, obviously underestimated by the designers, texture-shiny, convex rounded scales. Mostly young specimens are used, tk. The older the individual, the harder the skin. It looks best in products of small size.

Snake.

The skin of a snake happens, like a crocodile, of various kinds: python, cobra, sea snake. Most often the skin is scaly and rough (but the water snake is smooth). Scales have a tiled or honeycomb structure. Skin differs in "dorsal" and "abdominal". The first has a smaller picture, the second is larger and embossed. The skin is rather thin and tender, requires careful handling, often used in female models of watch straps.

Stingray.

Stingray leather  - is most often used in the manufacture of female watch straps. Its texture resembles droplets of dew. The skin is divided into polished and not polished. In the center of skins all skates have a so-called "pearl", which they try to place in the most prominent places. This skin is very strong and durable, but does not fit all belts. The most difficult to process leather.

 Ostrich.

Ostrich leather can be of two types: skin from the body and skin from the legs of the ostrich. It has two unique invoices. On the skin of the ostrich there are 2 unique textures: the so-called points, pimples "- the places where the feathers were located, and the so-called" crumpled "texture. The skin of the ostrich's paws has a completely different pattern than the skin from the ostrich's body. Not looking at the fact that the skin of the ostrich is thin, it is resistant to damage and durable.

Elephant.

The leather of an elephant is very strong, durable skin, which has its own unique pattern. She looks like velvet. This is a rather rare type of skin, unpretentious when worn, but at the same time quite soft.

Shark.

Shark's leather is extremely durable, wear-resistant leather. In the past, this skin was used as a "nazhdachki", but modern treatment makes it soft and pleasant to the touch. During the processing, scales are removed, under which a slightly relief wavy pattern appears.

Horse.

The horse's leather (cordovan) is taken from the back (groats) of the horse. Has a homogeneous structure and a matte finish. It is subdivided into cordovan and shellcordovan. The difference is shellcordovan from cordovan in the site used for production. Shellcordovan is a very expensive skin, only 35-45 square decimeters of skin shellcordovan is produced from the skin, it is produced in small batches in just a few countries. It is mainly used for footwear production.

Leather from cattle.

Leather of cattle. Very often it is called a cow, because A significant part is made from cow skins. Also for production is used bull, cowhide and calfskin. Has a huge number of all kinds of textures. This is the most used leather in the manufacture of watch straps, purses, belts, bags and other haberdashery.

The skin of small cattle.

Leather of small cattle. Sheepskin and goat skins are used for production. Very soft and elastic leather medium strength.

Leather from military ammunition.

This is a leather from the ammunition of wartime, preserved to date in the form of various pouches, cartridge-holders, officer's tablets, as well as other military uniforms. This leather is of high quality, as well as an unrivaled appearance, because it's not a secret for anyone that leather things, with due care, over the years, become even more attractive. Often, the pouches were not stored on dusty racks, but were used for their intended purpose, resulting in pronounced cuts, oil stains, and the initials of the people they belonged to. Despite the fact that formally this kind of skin can be attributed to the clay of cattle, yet it deserves a separate mention.
